Blood Test vs Biopsy

Posted on Monday, September 25, 2006

I tested positive for celiac disease with a blood test recently but I am in a bit of denial. Have you heard of false positives and do you recommend a small intestine biopsy to confirm the diagnosis?
Thank you and your web site is VERY informative!

  • There are both false postives and false negatives with the blood test. We do recommend having a biopsy since it is the only way to confirm a blood test. The biopsy will only work if you are OFF a gluten free diet. In this time, while you wait for your biopsy please consume as much gluten as you can handle. This will make it easier to make a positive diagnosis. You can make a biopsy negative if you are on a gluten free diet before getting the biopsy. If you have any further questions or need assistance please feel free to call us at 1-800-387-4064
