Is it possible to have celiac disease and not be allergic to wheat?

  • This is a great question!

No, unfortunately this is not possible. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when certain foods hurt your small intestines.
Your small intestine is part of your digestive system, where the nutrients in the food you eat are absorbed by your body. The surface of the small intestines is covered with millions of little finger-like projections called villi. This is where many nutrients from your food are absorbed into the blood.
With Celiac Disease, the villi become damaged by gluten which is found in foods that contain wheat, oats, barley and rye, amongst others.
